What is Peer Teaching?

Peer teaching is an instructional strategy where students teach other students. A student who understands a concept well explains it to classmates, while the teacher acts as a facilitator.

▪️It promotes collaboration, confidence, and deeper learning.
▪️Learners benefit because they often understand better when explained in “student language.”
▪️The peer teacher develops leadership, communication, and mastery of the subject.

Class: 8
Subject: Science (example: Photosynthesis)
Duration: 40 minutes
Topic: Photosynthesis – Process & Importance

1.General Objectives

▪️To develop scientific understanding of how plants make food.
▪️To improve communication, teamwork, and leadership through peer teaching.
▪️To encourage active participation and self-learning.

2.Specific Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1.Define photosynthesis.
2.Identify raw materials and products of photosynthesis.
3.Explain the role of chlorophyll and sunlight.
4.Present and discuss ideas in peer groups confidently.

3.Teaching Method:Peer Teaching

4.Teaching Aids

▪️Chart of photosynthesis equation
▪️Diagram of leaf cross-section
▪️Flash cards (with keywords: Sunlight, CO₂, Water, Glucose, Oxygen)

5.Procedure

Step 1 – Introduction (5 minutes)

➤ Teacher asks: “How do plants prepare their food?”
➤ A few students respond. Teacher introduces photosynthesis.
➤ Teacher divides the class into 4 groups.

Step 2 – Peer Preparation (10 minutes)

➤ Each group selects one peer teacher.
➤ Teacher provides short notes/materials to peer teachers.

Peer teachers prepare to explain their assigned subtopic:

Group 1: Definition of photosynthesis
Group 2: Raw materials needed
Group 3: Role of sunlight and chlorophyll
Group 4: Products and importance

Step 3 – Peer Teaching (15 minutes)

➤One by one, peer teachers explain their part to their group using the chart/flash cards.
➤Each group discusses and asks questions.

Teacher moves around, guiding and correcting if needed.

Step 4 – Group Sharing (5 minutes)

One student from each group presents the summary of their discussion to the whole class.

Step 5 – Teacher Wrap-Up (3 minutes)

➤ Teacher summarizes the complete photosynthesis process.
➤ Writes the photosynthesis equation on the board.

Step 6 – Assessment (2 minutes)

Quick quiz:
“Name the raw materials of photosynthesis.”
“What gas is released during the process?”

6.Evaluation

➤Oral questioning
➤Observation of peer teaching participation
➤Group presentation quality
➤Short quiz answers

7.Follow-up Activity

➤Students draw a labeled diagram of photosynthesis in their notebooks.
➤Homework: Write five reasons why photosynthesis is important for life on Earth.
